Being that the Yankees are a baseball team and not a football team, there are some differences in the way you bet on the game. Because baseball games are frequently decided by one or two runs; ‘spreads’, common in football betting, are not applicable.

It Will Cost you Money to Make Money

Because the spread is not applied to baseball betting, a ‘money line’ is used by sportsbooks. You decide whether you are going to bet on the favorite or the underdog—Yankees are frequently the favorite—then you decide the amount of money you want to bet and that amount determines the amount that you may possibly win. Negative money lines and positive money lines, as they apply to the underdog or the favorite, come into play here and can be extremely confusing when it comes to novice sports betting. After the first or second time it gets easier to understand. An example would be betting the Yankees over the Red Sox when the Yankees are favored. If you are planning on making a $100 bet, the money line could be $140 for the Yankees and $120 for the Red Sox. If you bet on the Yankees and they won, you collect $240 thereby winning $100 on the bet.

No Spread, But a ‘Run Line’

Now baseball does deal with a run line as opposed to football’s spread. Let’s say your Yankees are a huge favorite; 2 points or even 1½ points can be deducted from the favored team’s score. I know this sounds a lot like a spread in football; the run line matters so much that it can actually take the favored team and turn them into the underdog. Bummer for the Yankees.
