New York’s Top Philanthropies

Just because New York is one of the biggest and most populated areas in North America doesn’t mean that social enterprise in the area is doing any better than any other American in the area of economy; particularly concerning these last couple of years.

Philanthropy At An All Time Low

It’s sad but it’s true; when we as a population suffer financially, the charities to whom we usually try to be so generous suffer as well. Hand in hand with that—the percentage of the population that some of these social enterprises help support increases. There is a serious imbalance to this entire equation. Someone out there has money. Where are they and where is it? Does it take a millionaire to get behind a charitable cause in order for them to tread water these days? Are there enough millionaires to go around in order for that to happen?

Today’s Millionaires; Where Have They Gone?

Are there as many millionaires out there today as there used to be? Reportedly, compared to 2007 there are 39% fewer. New York however, does recognize the top philanthropies that are still doing what it is that they do on a tireless basis. There are awards entitled the Nonprofit Excellence Awards that New York issues annually. The 2011 winners of this heralded award were as follows: Sanctuary For Families; Harlem Academy; and City Harvest. Just a few of the things that this organization seeks to reward these social enterprises for are a community with nonprofit diversity and management practices that border on outstanding.

Resource development; effective fund raising that is ethical in nature; communications; use of technology and human resources; accounting and finance with the transparent management of such; forward momentum and structure; and other considerations are examined in the endowment of this prestigious award. Scholarships and cash awards are the accolades bestowed upon the winners.

Motorcycle Safety in New York

The advantages of driving a motorcycle in New York City are very nearly limitless. That doesn’t mean however that the need for a good motorcycle accident lawyer and more than adequate motorcycle insurance shouldn’t be a first concern.

The Benefits Of Biking

Traffic in New York City is horrendous on a good day. Taking a cab can get to be mighty pricey. Riding a bicycle not only takes a lot of physical exertion but it isn’t always practical. The solution? A motorcycle. It doesn’t even have to be a big, tricked out Harley. Small motorcycles are motorcycles, too. If you’re on two wheels and it has a motor it counts (unless it’s a scooter—that’s just silly).

Go With The Program

The program of which I speak is of course the New York State Motorcycle Safety Program. The best place to find out about this program is online at its home site. Don’t spoil the advantages of riding a motorcycle by not being fully schooled, represented and covered while doing so.

Parking is far less of a problem with a motorcycle and getting through traffic is easier as well. I’m not suggesting that you should go weaving in and out of cars during a traffic jam however; I would never say that.

Four simple words that were enough to make anyone’s April fool’s day anything but foolish: Bruce Springsteen New Jersey, because Jersey’s right around the corner for The Boss.

Still The Boss

So much for old standards; Bruce Springsteen opened his act on April 1 in DC with cuts from his newest album ‘Wrecking Ball’. His much anticipated visit to New Jersey on the 3rd and 4th of April, promises more of the same.  On April 6th and 9th he will play in neighboring New York. Good luck getting tickets however because by all reports they are sold out. No surprise there…it is The Boss after all. Calm down…there’s good news. The April 13th and 16th shows still have tickets available; right this very second.

More Hot Concerts

Of course Bruce Springsteen is not the only one honoring the New York/ New Jersey area with his presence. Madonna, you remember Madonna; Red Hot Chili Peppers; Liza Minnelli; Herbie Hancock; Coldplay; Creed; Lenny Kravitz; music’s most infamous diva Aretha Franklin and Lady Antebellum will all be performing at one point or another at various places in NY/NJ in 2012. Seems they have a nice mix of old school, new school and in between going for concerts this year. And I’m sure that they won’t have a problem selling tickets to any of the above listed shows.

There is also any number of exquisite Broadway shows gracing the theater’s of New York in 2012. Try these; Mamma Mia; Chicago; Phantom (of the opera); Spiderman; Lion King; Sister Act; Blue Man Group; Jesus Christ Superstar; Ghost (make sure to bring your Kleenex); Stomp; Jersey Boys and good old Mary Poppins. Grab your tickets before they sell out.
