Three Of A Kind

I’ve recently been watching three HBO series on DVD: The Sopranos, Deadwood, and Entourage. And I’ve really been struck by the similarities. Tonally and stylistically, they are quite different, but the way they all deal with the application of power and personality is striking. All three feature characters who do much of their business behind closed doors, constantly wheeling and dealing for money and poisition. The Sopranos and Deadwood are obviously much more clearly alike in how they deal with corruption, and they’re both basically about organized crime, whether it be the Italian-American mafia or Old West vice merchants and politicians. But, when you get down to it, much of Entourage is nearly as similar, even if it the goings on aren’t illegal. It makes you wonder what the next setting and collection of characters this formula could be applied to could be.
