Neil Young: Heart Of Gold
Directed by Jonathan Demme
Great performance(s), no doubt. The way Demme lingers on shots to allow you to just watch Young and others sing or play is admirable and refreshing in contrast to the way so many live performances are shot and edited in the MTV era — especially considering how gorgeous the look of the film is. Still, perhaps the filmmaking is a bit overly simplistic in its stubborn refusal to be flashy. It’s almost as if Demme is trying to achieve a style through lack of style itself.
