She Wore A Yellow Ribbon

Directed by John Ford

Olivia Dandridge: You don’t have to say it, Captain. I know all this is because of me… because I wanted to see the West… because I wasn’t, I wasn’t “Army” enough to stay the winter.
Captain Nathan Brittles: You’re not quite “Army” yet, miss… or you’d know never to apologize… it’s a sign of weakness.
Olivia Dandridge: Yes, but this was your last patrol and I’m to blame for it.
Captain Nathan Brittles: Only the man who commands can be blamed. It rests on me… mission failure!

The middle installment of Ford’s “Cavalry Trilogy” doesn’t quite measure up to its predecessor, Fort Apache, but I must admit to enjoying it more on this repeat viewing than previously. There are certainly some spectacular Monument Valley vistas, as well as that certain brand of “manly” Ford humor. And it’s always interesting to see whcih version of John Wayne will appear in any Ford film, but there’s never been as much complexity in this film as in some of the duo’s other collaborations. Worth the watch, but The Searchers it is not.
