Paradise Lost: The Child Murders Of Robin Hood Hills
Directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky
Let’s face it: it is basically impossible for a documentary to be completely unfiltered. Just the very fact that a camera and microphone can only capture so much of an environment or event means there’s no way that a documentary can claim to show every point of view. But many of the best documentaries at least make the effort to balance opinions on all sides of an issue with their opposing arguments. All in all, Paradise Lost represents as skilled an attempt at this as is, perhaps, possible. The filmmakers let the sides of the victims and the accused speak for themselves and, in the end, we’re left to our own opinions. The underlying emotions are allowed to make their own way to the surface, and, in this case, the result is a stunning indictment of a system that will nearly always unfortunately leave someone feeling ill-served or betrayed.
