Apocalypse Now
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola
Willard: It’s a way we had over here with living with ourselves. We cut ‘em in half with a machine gun and give ‘em a Band-Aid. It was a lie. And the more I saw them, the more I hated lies.
Hypnotic and totally engrossing. Once the final scenes roll around, you really feel like you’ve lived through something and traveled up a river toward impending doom. There really aren’t any bad performances, but the whole thing rests squarely on Martin Sheen’s shoulders. And he carries it in a way few could. This really is a film made by a lot of people at the top of their game. Especially director of photography Vittorio Storaro — the colors and light he captures are gorgeous.
