X-Men: The Last Stand

Directed by Brett Ratner

Professor X: You of all people know how fast the weather can change.

Well, it’s not terrible, but it certainly doesn’t stand up next to the previous films. The problem, which is surely the result of Bryan Singer’s absence, is a certain lack of imagination that permeated the first two, making them vital editions to the whole X-Men mythos. This installment is like a paint-by-numbers version of its predecessors. Before there were scenes of interesting character development and everything built to satisfying climaxes, which, let’s face it, meant fight scenes. Here the scenes that should be used for character development seem like they’re written in shorthand and only exist to mark time between the inevitable fight scenes. And the whole “Phoenix Saga” storyline is regrettably shortchanged. Really, it should probably be the main storyline, instead of a subplot to the “cure” storyline. It would be much more satisfying to see the characters we already know grow, rather than get a cavalcade of character introductions and cameos that go nowhere and serve no real purpose other than to throw a bone to fanboys.
