Coming Home

Directed by Hal Ashby

Luke Martin: I have killed for my country, or whatever, and I don’t feel good about it. Cause there’s not enough reason, man, to feel a person die in your hands, or to see your best buddy get blown away.

Hal Ashby made some of the most respected films of the 1970s, which is quite an achievement when you think about what other films were made at the time. By 1978, people were finally ready for high profile films about the Vietnam War, so they got at least two: this and The Deer Hunter. Aided by the great Haskell Wexler’s long lensed photography and excellent performances from Jon Voight, Jane Fonda, and Bruce Dern, Ashby crafted a great anti-war film out of a story partially based on the experience of Ron Kovic — later portrayed in Oliver Stone’s Born On The Fourth Of July. And with an excellent soundtrack to boot.
