Election Day: Brooklyn Borough President

Candidates:
Theodore Alatsas [Republican, Conservative]
Marty Markowitz [Democrat, Working Families] - INCUMBENT
Gloria Mattera [Green]
Gary Popkin [Libertarian, Reform]

In the end, the Borough President is not much more than a voice. The power of the office depends in large part on how loud the voice of the officeholder is. Markowitz has definitely proven he can be loud. So with incumbency his, the issue boils down to whether you like what he says. If you want Brooklyn to prosper on tourism and development, vote for Marty Markowitz. If you’re against the many controversial development projects proposed for Brooklyn of late, perhaps Gloria Mattera’s focus on the environment and education will be more your thing. Of course, if you want a Borough President who wants to cut down on government — kind of a funny position for someone who essentially has no real power — there’s Gary Popkin. And don’t forget Thedore Alatsas. Oh, wait, this is Brooklyn and he’s a Republican, so most everyone already has.

If you do end up voting for Markowitz, perhaps you should think of voting for him on the Working Families Party line. It will show your support for the “Minor Party With Major Possibilities.”
