Cigar-smoking seems to have an image to obtain – that of being appropriate only for those individuals who are suave and cunning. Despite the health risks involved in smoking, Hollywood films have been using cigars to make their characters have just that special “something” only a cigar in their hands allows them to obtain.

Hollywood Films Portraying Cigar-Smoking Characters

Clint Eastwood and John Wayne both smoked cigars in several of their films. Tony Montana, played by Al Pacino, in Scarface smoked a cigar, as well as several characters in Blazing Saddles, Hellboy, Boondock Saints, Band of Brothers and many other films. It seems like all of the characters who smoke cigars are able to invoke a sense of intimidation and fearlessness. They are prestigious and limitless in their accomplishments and power, simply smoking a cigar rather than dripping sweat or chewing nails when trouble comes along. In their hands, they hold a cigar, but in their minds, they hold all the power they will ever need.
The health risks associated with smoking cigars have caused films to take a look at how they are using cigars to achieve a certain affect that may want to be emulated by impressionable youth. However, despite the risks associated with smoking (and despite the influence they may have over youth), several celebrities still love their cigars.

Hollywood Stars Who Love Their Cigars

In addition to Hollywood movies, there are some Hollywood stars who enjoy cigar smoking in their personal lives as well.  President Clinton, Sylvester Stallone and Salma Hyak enjoy cigars as well as Demi Moore, John Travolta, John Wayne, Mel Gibson, Michael Douglas and Jack Nicholson. Arnold Schwarzenegger believes that films shouldn’t “erase” smoking, saying, “I don’t believe that we should erase when someone smokes a cigar in a movie. I think that we should remind people and kids all the time about the dangers of smoking. Certain characters can not be played without a cigar, believes Schwarzenegger, such as Winston Churchill, who always had a cigar in hand.
